Nasi in Melayu means Rice. However, Nasi Katok has its own history in Brunei Darussalam. It was started years ago, when a Chinese couple who lived on Kampong Mabohari sold food. The rice served with a piece of chicken and chilli paste. They sold it in their house so the customers who wanted to buy must knock the door and windows.
Knocking in Brunei is Katok. Since they had to knock to get the rice, this food then famous as Nasi Katok. Rice which you should knock the seller’s house door to get it especially at night. Actually this food was sold during the day and night, like 24 hours. At night most of the buyer has to knock the house to get this food. Ever since then, people in Brunei Darussalam called it as Nasi Katok.
Nowadays, Nasi Katok becomes the part of Bruneian daily life. There are some stalls or even restaurants which sell this dish. Refer to some information, Nasi Katok Seri Mama in Bandar Seri Begawan Brunei Darussalam is the most recommended one.
Luckily, I stayed at Jubilee Hotel in the city center. There was one stall of Nasi Katok Seri Mama at Jalan Cator. Actually it was walking distance from the hotel. So, after strolling around Bandar Seri Begawan during the day, we stopped by at this Nasi Katok Seri Mama.
It was only us, no queue. Some people said that most of time Nasi Katok Seri Mama is full with customers. Maybe because we came when it was close to praying time. Even the road was almost empty that evening.
This stall serve you for dining in and take away. We chose to eat in the hotel so we took our order away. One package of Nasi Katok consisted of white rice, fried chicken, and chilli paste. The portion is small so if you are a big eater, you might need to order two package.
The fried chicken and chili paste mostly oily for me. The chili paste was quite hot but it matched with the chicken. I ate one package and that was enough for me. Somehow, the chili paste was a bit sweet. But all is depend on your appetite and preference.
So, when you are in Bandar Seri Begawan; it is no harm to stop by and try this dish. The must have local food in Brunei Darussalam. And, it will not dry your pocket as it is only 1 Brunei Dollar. Very cheap!!
